Longing - Chapter 2 (snippet #33)...
A few seconds crept by before the porch light flickered on, followed by the click of a deadbolt and then she stood face to face with her prey.
The vet had already changed into sweats, and she had her hair pulled back in a low ponytail. “May I help you?”
This was the part that terrified Taylor the most. The way the beast controlled the situation, used her own voice against her. Even as the words crawled from her lips, she wanted to take them back. Or at the very least, have this over with. Quickly. “Hey, I’m so sorry to bother you. I was trying to get downtown. There’s a concert, and I’m supposed to wait in line for tickets. Somehow I ended up,” she gestured around her, “here.”
The woman gave her a blank stare.
The beast continued. “Yeah, obviously, I’m completely lost. My cellphone just died and I don’t have my charger with me. I need to call and let a friend know that I’ll be late meeting her. Would you mind if I used your phone?”
The vet gripped the edge of the door a little tighter and lifted a skeptical, thin brow.
