Today I'm sharing from my (unpublished) young adult paranormal romance Running From Shadows!

Follow Greta Shore (a 17-year-old, black-haired wiccan beauty) and Paxton "Pax" Craig (an 18-year-old, blond-haired college student with a dark secret) as they discover the fate of their forbidden love.
(Read last week's post. Set-up) Greta runs away from her surprise engagement partthrough the woodsPax saves her from a shadow demon. Oh, and he's a unicorn!
Back at Pax's cabin, Greta and Pax talk. He tells her that the shadow has fed on her emotions. And that it's definitely someone she knows. And she must under no circumstance confront it because it will kill her. And don't get emotional about anything! >.< Pax takes Greta home. Now, she has to face...her mother! Only Aunt Lil greets her, and they talk about the marriage contract her mother signed... Eep!

I stood, letting the blanket fall to the couch. The feel of its weight dropping from my shoulders left me vulnerable.

Mom rushed into the living room, worry behind the dark look in her eyes. “What were you thinking?” She threw her hands up and her palms were red; either she’d been wringing them together or trying to perform a spell. Both explanations equaled bad news for me.

“What was I thinking...You’re joking, right? I’m not the one who sold her only daughter to the highest bidder!”

Tune in next week for more angsty spooky goodness!

  1. Rut-roh. Mama ain't happy. So much for keeping her emotions in check!!

  2. Always a new twist or turn in the story, great job, intriguing snippet!

  3. Karen, you've posted a terrific snippet pulling this reader into the scene. Thanks.

  4. She might feel vulnerable, but she's still able to sass...typical teen : )

  5. Add another suspect for the demon: Mom.

  6. Wow! What a plot twist! I didn't see that coming! Nicely done :-)

  7. Very exciting! I love the unicorn shifter.

  8. Love the detail of the blanket falling from her shoulders--of course, she might feel silly if she'd left it wrapped around her, too.

I wonder if her mom has some sort of good (or sort of good) reason for the marriage--it seems like her mom does care at least a little.

  9. When hand wringing is as bad for you as spell casting you know you are in not in a good position.
