Guest interview with author Ken Lange and beasts living between realms... #amreading #indie

Hello, my lovelies! Today we have a special guest interview. Big shout out to Ken Lange! Take it away, Ken...

Blurb

My name is Viktor Engel Warden, and I’m here to tell you that there’s more to this world than you might suspect.

There are things that slither and pass unseen through the night, and it’s my job to stop them. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. Twenty years ago, I ended a nightmare that would’ve brought the world to its knees. I thought it was over…but I was wrong.

The Cult of Fenrir has returned, and they’re stronger than ever. Now I’m in a race to find the survivors of that day so I can stop them again. Permanently. If I get things wrong…which I wont…but if I do…it might just bring about the apocalypse. But, hey, no pain, no gain, and all that BS. Right? Yeah, I’m not buying it either.

Interview Questions

What is your main character’s motivation?

Viktor is a complicated guy, but his main motivation would have to be putting one foot in front of the other to get the job done. He’s a fighter in every sense of the word. The man is unwilling to give up, he’s incapable of compromising his core beliefs, and he’ll stand up for what he thinks is right. Of course, ‘what he thinks is right’ isn’t always what’s legal or currently socially acceptable. Don’t expect that to stand in the way of doing what needs to be done.

Then there’s the choice aspect of his personality. He’s a strong believer that everything is choice. While every situation is different and has the ability to limit a person’s choices, it never prevents them from making one. There are times when none of the available options are good, but there’s always a choice, and it’s up to the individual to do the right thing. His entire life is a constant reminder that we are free to make any choice we desire, but we are not free of the consequences.

What is his secret strength/weakness?

The simple answer to both: his moral code. First and foremost, he won’t interfere in certain situations, even if doing so would make his life easier. He’s exceptionally inflexible here, which is why it’s both a strength and a weakness.

If he says he’ll do a thing, he’ll do it, no matter the cost to him personally. There’s a long list of other ethical things he believes in, but those will be touched on throughout the series. Long and short of it is this: he’s willing to fight and die for those beliefs. That’s what makes him a very dangerous man, and at times predictable, but not in the ways his adversaries would hope.

Any philosophical issues in this story?

The story is meant to entertain, but it also shows a man who’s trying to do right, even if it isn’t the easy or polite thing to do. He won’t ignore a problem, he won’t shy away from his responsibilities, and he fully accepts who he really is…not the person others think him to be.

I touch on issues of tolerance and acceptance a few times, but not for the reason you might think. I’m not making a conscious decision to put it in there…it’s just how I see the world.

It doesn’t matter to me what label is placed on you. What matters to me is: are you a decent human being? If the answer to that is yes, we can be friends. That being the case, I know a wide range of people. That’s why I use a diverse set of characters that span the gambit of human nature. I feel that it comes closer to accurately representing the world as it is, and keeps me from confining myself to a narrow margin of the population.

When did you start to write this one and why?

That’s a tough one. It’s been rumbling around for well over two decades in one form or another, but it wasn’t until 2010 that I got serious about it. That’s when I put a lot of it to paper and shared it with friends…it was terrible. The good thing is, all that research, note-taking, and terribleness led to figuring out different elements of the story and retooling the book to actually make sense.

Now as to the why. I’m fascinated with Norse mythology. The description of Odin’s palace, and the other gods’ homes are fantastic. They describe them as gleaming metal palaces that roar through the skies...kind of sounds like the way primitive man would describe a spacecraft.

No, I’m not an ancient alien kind of guy, but I won’t deny that the idea of them not being gods and possibly something extra-terrestrial in nature helped the concept along.

When will it be available?

15 November.

What’s next in this series or in your next book?

Galen’s Peace should be next in the Warden Global Novels. Of course, the title is subject to change, this one’s did. I’m also working on the follow up to my first novel, Accession of the Stone Born…Yes there’s a title, but I’m not sharing it yet since it’s going to take place after Galen’s Peace. Don’t fret, it’s not far off.

Where do you get your ideas?

Reading, art, and music. The reading gets me out of my own head and expands my viewpoint, not to mention the fact that I love it. The artwork can be almost anything, a photo, painting, even a well-done font can trigger an idea. At other times, it’s music that gives me that spark. Once it’s there, it doesn’t go away and rattles around in my head until I do something about it.

Who or what inspired you to become a writer?

I’ve always been fascinated by a great story; it’s my escape from reality into the magical realms of the written word. It’s always intrigued me how scratches made on clay, stone, wood or paper can touch people so deeply. I’m truly an introvert, and this is my way of sharing the worlds spinning in my head with others.

For me, writing heals the heart, rebuilds a broken soul, and gives hope to a failing body. It allows me to walk amongst the stars and go places that otherwise I couldn't, and it gives me the humanity that I've lost along the way.

What is the hardest part about being a writer?

Trying not to ‘good idea’ myself into oblivion. Sometimes, I’m plagued by what I think are fantastic ideas then I write them down and run with it, only to realize that maybe it wasn’t as good as I’d thought. Well, at least not yet. That’s the thing about ideas—they can be used at a later date.

Where did you get the premise for this book?

I was reading a lot of Norse mythos, and because a lot of it has been destroyed over the centuries, I had questions…so this is me filling in the blanks, and retelling some of their stories, along with my own.

Was there a part of the story that was difficult to write?

The opening for this book was the trickiest. I actually removed the prologue—you can find it on my blog if you want to see what it originally sounded like—and finished the book, never fixing the part where I actually introduce the character. So that’s why there’s a journal entry now instead of having to wait for several chapters to get the character’s name.

What advice would you give to other writers?

To be themselves and not try to be someone else. It’s a lot easier that way.

My RWA Chapter's 3rd Annual “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest is OPEN! #writemotivation

JUDI(Reblogged from my RWA sister, Jenna Jaxon. Ohhh, guess what?? My lovely agent Terrie Wolf is one of the final judges!!!!)

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a member of the Chesapeake Romance Writers, my local chapter of Romance Writers of America.  Two years ago we inaugurated an annual writing contest in memory of our long-time member Judi McCoy, author of fourteen romances and the very popular “Dogwalker” romantic mystery series.

Judi was a driving force in our chapter, a mentor to new writers, a great critique partner, and an avid dog lover.  Her beloved bichon frise, Rudy, was a rescue dog and Judy supported the Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue organization where she adopted him.

To honor the memory of Judi and Rudy, Chesapeake Romance Writers is once again holding our “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest. That was one of Judi’s favorite pieces of advice to all of us writers and we thought it an apropos title for this contest.  If you’ve finished a book, at least 55K in length, please consider submitting it to our contest.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue organization in memory of Judi and Rudy.

Complete details on the contest are now available on our Chesapeake Romance Writers website or you can email me (Jenna) crwc@rocketmail.com with any questions, but I’ll give you the highlights here.

The contest is open to both published and unpublished authors, although the work submitted must be unpublished AND remain unpublished or uncontracted until after the contest.  Should an entered work become contracted or published before the contest ends, the work will be withdrawn from consideration and the entry fee will not be refunded.

To enter you need to submit the first and last chapters of your unpublished 55K+ manuscript (no prologues or epilogues), plus a two-page synopsis of the entire work that will not be judged.  Total submission must not exceed 40 pages.

This year we are going GREEN–only electronic entries will be accepted.  You should submit two things: 1) the Contest Entry Form, available on the CRW website, and 2) the first and last chapters plus a two-page synopsis of the book in one single (1) Rich Text file.

Entrants will receive the First Round Judges’ Score Sheets with comments.  No comments will be made on the manuscripts themselves.  The three top scoring works in each category will advance to the Finals Round and will be ranked by the Category Finals Judge.

Contest opens:  August 1, 2014
Deadline for Entry Fee and Submission:  Midnight, September 30, 2014
rudy+picCategories include:  Contemporary, Paranormal, Historical, Mainstream with Romantic Elements, Young Adult/New Adult, and this year we are adding EROTIC ROMANCE.

Finalist Judges for the contest are still being confirmed and will be announced shortly.
Winners will be announced at our chapter  meeting on January 10, 2015.
Entry Fee:  $15.00 for RWA members, $25.00 for non-RWA members

All Finalists will receive a certificate and a banner for their website.
First place Winners in each category will receive a Rudy Statuette and a check for $50.00.
I hope you will consider entering our 3rd annual “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest.  You’ll get great feedback and the chance to get your work before some excellent agents and editors in the publishing industry.  If you have questions for me, you can ask via comments or my Contact Me page.
I hope to see your name on a finalist list come October 31!

COME ON!  FINISH THAT DAMNED BOOK! :)

Excited for y'all to get to know my dragons better :)

Longing - Chapter 1 (snippet #3)...

Her demon was right. She would never break the curse. Eventually she wouldn’t be able to hold out, and she would become a monster once again.
She shivered as she tiptoed her way to her folded stack of clothes on the desk. One day she would be with someone who’d make her want to rip her clothes off instead of neatly organize them before hooking up. Until then, she wouldn’t wrinkle couture. She pulled up the stockings and boots, hooked her bra and then slipped the turtle neck dress over her head. Yeah, she would get strange looks from people for her outfit choice, but she was used to that. She dressed for winter even during the summer.

Guest Post: EFT and Unblocking your Writing Potential by Dana D’Angelo...

Today Dana D'Angelo--author of One True Knight--is here visiting us with her guest post on Emotional Freedom Technique...

Welcome, Dana! Tell us more about EFT!

You need a positive attitude in this business of writing.

Right from the start, you have fears and doubts that can prevent you from finishing your book. And when you do finish your manuscript, you could wait anxiously for up to a year for a publisher to get back to you. And even if you self-publish, which is the route I decided to take with One True Knight, a whole host of things that may or may not go wrong come to the forefront.

So how do you maintain a positive attitude in the midst of all this negativity, fear and self-doubt?

Surprisingly, it's not that difficult. While in my quest to improve myself as a person and as a writer, I came across the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. This technique is based on the Eastern concept of energy flow or meridian lines (like in acupuncture). The idea is to have your entire energy system flowing freely. If there's an energy blockage somewhere in your system, you may develop a disruption, which can manifest itself as negative emotions and/or affect your health on a physical level.

All you need to do is to use two fingers, and tap on various places on your body while focusing on an affirmative statement. By tapping along the meridian lines, you can then neutralize your negative emotions and change your mental state.

I could go into detail on how to perform EFT on yourself, but then it just gets too technical, and I might lose you. My goal in this blog post is to introduce you to the concept. If you feel compelled to learn more, Google it or check it out on Youtube.

I promise you that you'll be glad you did. I believe that when you're in a positive state of mind, you will reach your potential - in all you do.

Best wishes and positive vibes go out to you in meeting your potential, whether it’s in pursing your dream in writing or in your personal life.

  • Running From Shadows didn't make it into the agent round of the Come and Get It contest. However, my query received some excellent critiques, so I plan to do a little revamping.
  • Just signed up for the free version of HootSuite. Gonna give it a try. Seems like a good idea to have Twitter/FB both on the same app. Plus, it allows me to schedule tweets/shares. Will keep you posted!

Me at Alcatraz in 2011
  • Things are coming along nicely for the yet-to-be-titled alien novella. I'm nearly at 11k words. The goal is 40k. As I talk about the alien story, which takes place in San Francisco, California... I'll be posting some pictures from the trip my hubby and I took there last year. This pic is inside the prison (Alcatraz Island). In my novella this is where everyone on their 18th birthday is taken to be tested, and if you're a DNA Match--well, let's just say...you don't wanna be a match!
  • I started Witch Way book #2 revisions on Monday! I'm doing my first read thru, making comments on things that need to be tweaked and adding notes in places where additional scenes/details will need to be written.
  • Here's a teaser from book #2 I'm super happy with (as always, no spoilers to book #1 or #2).
  • (Myles POV) He shuddered, but kept drinking. This was for Breena…to be with her. If he could go the rest of his existence without an ounce of blood, he would. Some vampires lived to drink. Myles drank to live.

Author Spotlight with L.K. Below! 9 Days until the release of This Blackened Night, The Order: Book 3!

Today I'm soo excited to host L.K. Below on my blog! She is here today to share with us about This Blackened Night book #3!!!

Welcome, L.K.!!

Every author has a set of characters more dear to their hearts than any others. In most cases, this stems from these characters being among the first ever created. I won't claim Lori and Terrence were my very first, but they did come close. Their first book, Stalking Shade, which released in 2011, was originally written in 2007. And rewritten. And rewritten.

And now it feels like a dear friend is moving away. With the release of This Blackened Night on September 24th, 2012, the trilogy will come to an end. Lori might be a prickly character, not easy for anyone but Terrence to love, but I had a lot of fun with her. When I wrote this third book late last year, I dragged my feet to see it finished for the same reason. I didn't want to let the pair of them go. A not-so-secret part of me is hoping for an overwhelming response from readers asking me to continue so I have an excuse to revisit my favorite characters.

For now, I'm counting down the days until the third book releases. Maybe you'll fall in love with Lori and Terrence every bit as fiercely as I have. Lori might be stubborn in pushing people away, but Terrence is the most persistent character I've ever written. Good thing, too.

Join me in celebrating the release of the third book a bit early with this short, sweet teaser excerpt:

Enjoy!!

This Blackened Night by L.K. Below

With murders cropping up all around, who should she trust?

After months of searching, Lori finally scrounges up a clue as to the whereabouts of the missing leader of her secret organization. But her vision isn't encouraging--it points to her vampire companion Terrence as the culprit.

Terrence is adamant that he isn't at fault. Even though she knows she might be walking into a trap, she follows his lead to a shabby island port. When her informants start turning up dead with puncture wounds in their necks, Lori wonders just how well she knows Terrence. And why does he act different during the search than in their hotel room?

Lori doesn't know who to trust anymore. She only hopes that she won't be the next victim.

Seven Sweet Sentences from the book:

Her sister was killed, you know.”

“I heard.” Lori’s voice sounded distant to her own ears. After clearing her throat, she added, “I heard she was killed by”--Lord, did she really have to say it?--“the devil.”

The waitress laughed, though the sound was strained. “A mainlander like you probably thinks that’s ridiculous.”

You can say that again.

I'm so in love with my characters already! (Side note--if you are reading this and know about my grim reaper story...never fear! hahahahaha I swear I didn't mean to just type that pun!!!!! *rolls on floor laughing* Anyway, I plan to work on reaper story for NaNoWriMo.)
  • Starting Witch Way book #2 revisions this weekend!
  • Here's a teaser from book #2 I'm super happy with (as always, no spoilers to book #1 or #2).
  • Yes, she would do this. Of her own accord. Not because she’d fallen. She’d often thought about jumping into the lake from her dam before…fear had held her back. Fear of heights, the unknown, death. Those things didn’t register right now. None of it did. She needed energy. Freedom. And she would take it from her lake. The wet caress of waves around her would comfort her. Had to.

**Gossamer Excerpt:

“It’s kind of ironic our rendezvous point is at the corner of Magnolia and Pansy.” I chuckled. Grant looked at me and arched an eyebrow. He was so cute when he did that. “You know Pansy.” I got nothing. “It’s a joke. You know we are making our great, big, daring escape from Pansy Lane.” He still looked confused. I shook my head. “Never mind.” He didn’t press for an explanation. I shot him a sidelong glance. “Are all grants as serious as you?”

The corner of his mouth tugged up. “I can’t say all, but most grants are guards. Serious comes with the job.”

“So, you’re a guard?” He nodded. “Hmm.”

“Hmm, what?” A smile still played at the corners of his mouth.

“I’m not surprised. You’re observant and cautious. Protective. But, I guess that comes with the job, too.”

“Protective?” His tone doubtful as he repeated my word choice. “I don’t know about that. My job is to sense danger and act upon it if necessary. Safety--I provide safety. I think protectiveness is fueled by emotions, typically, and that goes beyond my job description.”

I was taken aback by Grant’s comment. It seemed almost cold. “But, you told my parents you’d protect me?”

We finally arrived at our destination and I could see Conor already waiting. Grant stopped and looked at me.

“And I will,” he said and walked away.

I was locked into place. My brain incapable of processing his comment and walking at the same time. Was that his way of saying he cared about me? Which really didn’t mean much. I cared about my friends, too. Oh, but I really wanted him to mean something more. Don’t read too much into it. I forced my mind to clear and approached the guys.

Grant filled Conor in on Lexie’s plans to pick us up. He seemed to like the idea of not having to walk the entire way and I could have sworn he liked the idea of seeing Lexie one last time.

The three of us stood silently waiting for her. The humid night air left my skin clammy. A few minutes later a black car pulled up alongside the curb. The tinted passenger window glided down and Lexie peered out at us.

“Need a ride?” She asked with a wicked grin. I grinned back. I was going to miss her. I opened the door and decided to let the boys fight over who got the front seat. Grant stopped me and told me to sit in the front. Although I’m sure he was being a gentleman, I had a strong feeling they didn’t want to deal with the onslaught of questions she was sure to have.

They squished into the back and I climbed in. I pulled my seat up as far as possible, feeling sorry for Grant as he tried to contort into such a small space. I felt bad for Conor too, of course.

As soon as we were buckled, Lexie’s car coasted onto the quiet street.

“Okay, first where to?” She looked at me expectantly. I glanced back at the boys. Grant spoke up giving her directions. She nodded, not even caring that we were asking her to drive us practically out of town.

She laughed. “It’s pretty funny you’re making your big getaway from Pansy Lane.”

“Thank you!” I over exaggerated my words and rolled my eyes at Grant. “See. Joke. Funny.” He grinned and shook his head. I faced front again as my heart fluttered from the adorable way he looked at me.

Six Sentence Sunday: 9/2/12... Such a tease! Witch Way to Turn...

Hooray for Six Sentence Sunday!

Thank you for stopping by. I'm excited to participate with such a fantastic group of writers!

Today I'm sharing from my (published) young adult paranormal romance Witch Way to Turn!! And yupper, I like to push the envelope! *pushes further this week* teehee

How can Breena decide between the sexy, heart-on-the-line preternatural assassin sent to kill her (but can't) OR
the oh-so-hot and caring vampire convict sent to protect her?

Well, which way would you turn? ;)

Last week we left Breena in the arms of the preternatural as he trailed a path of hot kisses along her jaw line (desire can trigger his hunger to feed on soul, turning his eyes solid black)...

Even though his ears shot up through his hair, his eyes kept their sunflower ring. “When I’m away from you, all I can think about is being with you again.” He brought her arms to his neck, scooped her legs up and wrapped them around his waist. “Do you want me?”
She hesitated, not because she didn’t want to be with Orin, but because being with him like that meant in her mind she’d sealed her choice. “Yes.”

What happens next? Wouldn't you like to know!? teeheehee Tune in next week!

  • Am pluggin' away on book #2 in the Witch Way series. Current word count is a little over 62,000 words!
  • Here's a teaser line from book #2 I'm super happy with (as always, no spoilers to book #1 or #2). This is my girl Breena thinking about a lame arse excuse from one of her fellas. Omigod, if his reasoning gets any more circular, I may loop for eternity.
Getting personal... A Karen Fail!
So my best friend--since the 4th grade--celebrated her 30th birthday in July! I was so happy for her, but sad cos I was going to be out of town (at RWA) and would miss her BIG celebration.

When I got back home, things were crazy with WWTT's release, the month-long blog tour, my day job, writing book #2 and waiting for her final present that it put me behind in getting her gift mailed out. Once I got her presents together, wrote out this super long note and packaged everything, I took it to the post office. Hooray, right?

Well... It had been almost a week since the tracking confirmation said it was delivered. So, I'm like: Hmm. I knew my BFF would've let me know once she got her gift, so I texted her and she said she hadn't received it. Ohh no! *panics*

(Insert backstory here) I'd scrolled through our texts and thought I'd found her home address (she lives 8 hours from me). Anyway, you can see where this is going. I mailed it to the wrong place! (Yes, I shoulda already had it saved in Google contacts, I'm slack...it's added now!)

My BFF was my Maid of Honor 2006
Wanna know where I mailed her b-day gift? To a freakin' restaurant!! Holy crap! Yes, I did. It was the most recent address I had in my text cos it was the most recent place we'd met up to hang out when I went to my BIL's wedding in May.

What happened to the gift? Right... So, I called the restaurant Monday night. Yes, they thought I was crazy. I don't disagree. They hadn't seen it and said to call back Tuesday to speak with the daytime manager. I did and she hadn't seen it either. Of course, I'm kicking myself cos I mailed my BFF's birthday present to the wrong dang address! *growls*

Annoyed with myself, I call the post office on a hope and a prayer that it somehow got returned to them. Yeah, they said no they didn't have it. Ugh! But then, the postal worker asks what the name of the restaurant was and I say: Cracker Barrel. She says, hold on. Apparently the carrier for that route was standing right there and said she saw the package in the mailbox still. Hooray!!! So they graciously offered to deliver the present to the correct address.

So I'm hoping today it will be waiting for my BFF when she gets home from work. *prays* Moral of this story...CONFIRM addresses before mailing something and SLEEP more so your brain isn't complete mush like mine. Phew.

Of course, my BFF was so sweet about the whole thing and I'm blessed to have such a wonderful friend in my life.

Random Alert! Random. Alert. Alert. Alert...

Rusty pup and me. He was only a few weeks old in 2008.
Okay, so this picture brings back memories! Picture this...a frosty January day. The hubs and I had driven 17 hours one way to Wisconsin (where Rustys come from) to get our little pup. It was a whirlwind trip. We talked to the breeders on that Thursday night, dreamed of our own little fella all Friday and then hopped in the car on Saturday. Got Rusty that same night (well, 2:00 AM), stayed in a hotel (without telling them about Rusty...whoopsy) and then drove 17 hours home the next day!
This is me and the cutie pie when he was a wee little bit of a thing and an even bigger demon!!! "Kill all humans!" Yes, that's what he was thinking. I can read doggie minds. Bet ya didn't know that about me. Hah.
