Today I'm sharing from my (unpublished) young adult paranormal romance Running From Shadows, currently being read by a lovely agent!! Squee!!

(Read last week's post) Set-up... Pax has just revealed that he's a unicorn AND a member of the Order of the Horn...

 What the hell? No. No way. “They’re real? Seriously?” I’d heard the legends, of course, all witches had, but my mother dismissed them in scathing tones and no one else in the coven would discuss it in anything above a whisper. A brief whisper.

“Seriously.” The deep cadence of his voice pleaded with me to accept this.

(Read last week's post) Set-up... Greta has learned that her shadow has been replaced with one of the demon's. And when she asks Pax if it'll hurt her, he just says, "I'll protect you." Um, yeah, that's not a good enough answer. She wants to know why...

“The shadow or the demon?” He lifted a brow.

“Both, I guess.”

“The shadow won’t hurt you. It’s how the demon lets the others know they can’t have you.”

“And the demon?” I picked at the hangnail. Screw it.

Last week... Pax gently swabs away the blood from Greta's injured shoulder and tends to the wound. Then as he looks at her with those blue eyes as dark as the sea, he notices the cut on her lip. She licks her lip and tastes the blood. He leans in closer, watching her. He carefully wipes away the blood, dabbing her lip with ointment and slowly slides his finger along the curve of her lip...

When he did, he didn’t back away. He stayed inches away from me, staring into my eyes with that dark gaze. He reached up to caress my cheek. The night stilled around us, and I could’ve stayed like that forever.

 

Then he jerked away and the stillness shattered. The absence of his touch left me empty.
