Teaser time!! If a genie found you... What would you wish for? #BETWEEN #LORE #YA

Hello, my lovelies! I am sooo SOOO excited to have been asked to participate in this anthology! The group of authors are extremely talented and their stories are fantastic, fun, and full of angst! Gotta love Young Adult stories!!!

Our anthology (Lore) is releasing in March... Official date coming soon!!!

Have you added Lore to your Goodreads TBR list? You totally should. Just sayin'. There are fairies, and mermaids, and genies, and and and sooo much more paranormal legend!! Ahhhh!

Okay, now for more on Between, which is my story in the anthology. It's a YA LGBT set in NYC about a girl, a genie, and a ton of bad decisions. Would you like to meet the main characters? Yup? Hooray!!! Prepare yourselves for all the awesome!!

Everything Lucy wants is so close and so far away. Even a wish won't bring her any closer...

Lucy is our heroine. She comes from an uber rich family--mother's a model and father's a movie-star agent--but all Lucy wants is her mom to pay attention to her...for someone to love her.

Natasha is a curvy, Russian beauty with a sexy accent. She's from a working-class family. Her mother is dead, and her father is abusive. All she wants is to be free of him and to find someone who cares about her.

Sienna is perfection. She's got the perfect body, the perfect rich family, and the perfect I-can-make-or-break-you attitude. But she's not happy. Everything she does is for the one girl she can't have.

Ashley's bio

Ashley is a thirty-something perpetual teenager. She (slowly) writes young adult fiction that pulls no punches and rarely conforms to the unspoken rules. Home is upstate South Carolina, where Ashley lives with her daughter, working for a living and striving to better herself and her craft.

Excerpt

“Yeah, 387 Greer Highway,” my voice was flat over the sound of sobbing, begging, in the background. “Overdose…barely…bourbon and something prescription, I’m not sure.”

The dispatcher pledged to stay on the line until the ambulance arrived, but I abandoned her first, setting the receiver on the kitchen counter and grabbing the car keys before walking out the front door, unnoticed. What was one more unforgivable act? Besides, I'd done my part. The rest would have to be on the two of them. I stood in the driveway looking back at for a few moments at this place that used to feel like home, and continued on my way to anywhere but here.

I don’t remember the three point turn, or creeping under the canopy of trees that shaded the long gravel drive from the house to the road. Time was lost and instinct took over steering, the gas pedal, and the brake, though I had no need for it. There was no traffic this time of night, when morning hung only a couple of hours over the horizon. I just drove, the lazy speed of the car moving through the dark echoing the numbness I’d succumbed to after struggling against it for so long. It felt almost nice.

I watched, lost in thought, as the darkened houses and pastures passed. I'd considered the existence of fate many times in my life, but only for the past few weeks with any real seriousness. The mistakes made tonight were no accident, no coincidence. Had any of it ever been?

Without realizing, I pulled the car off to the shoulder and into the grass, at that place on Greer Highway that had haunted me for what seemed like a lifetime. It felt like another life, when we’d been happy. I stared out the windshield, willing myself to see something real, something to anchor me in reality, but there was nothing.

I needed to feel it, this road I'd been avoiding in the weeks since. To touch it, know if there was anything left there. It felt like the natural place to make peace with all that had happened, apologize. There had been a purpose to all of it. Maybe she could forgive me. But would I ever forgive myself?

Excerpt:

I got home and made my way up the stairs to my third floor apartment, expecting Devon to be there, only to find the place empty. I checked the electronic lock panel next to the door, the entry log said no one had been inside since I'd left that morning. I frowned, wondering where Devon was as I started toward the bedroom to change out of my suit. As I turned toward the bedroom I spotted a piece of paper on the floor near the door, close to the wall or I would have stepped on it when I came in.

After the last thing I'd found under my door I wasn't sure I really wanted to know what this was, but I picked it up anyway. It was a printout of the news article I'd read that morning about Annie, but someone had slashed "SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOU" across the front with a red marker. Rolling my eyes, I set it on the table next to the door and went to change clothes.

I peeled out of my suit and hung it up. I was still standing in my underwear flipping through the clothes hanging in the closet, trying to find something to wear when I heard the front door open. I froze. I scented the air and caught the smoky fragrance that was Devon, but I wasn't sure if it was him coming in or a remnant from him sleeping in my bed. I really needed to learn to differentiate between old scents and fresh ones.

"Nick?" Devon's voice called from the living room. I let out the breath I'd been holding and went back to looking for something to wear.

"In here." I called back, pulling a sundress off a hanger. I quickly pulled it over my head and, still pulling it down, went to see him.

He stood just inside, frowning down at the threatening note, "Where did this come from?"

"I found it inside the door when I came in. You're later than I expected, I thought you'd be here when I got home."

He looked up, "I got hung up at your folks, and then I stopped and picked up dinner." He lifted the bag still hanging from one hand, "I don't like this." he said.

"I'm not real crazy about it, but what are we gonna do? I refuse to be terrorized or intimidated by people too cowardly to identify themselves."

He sighed, "Will you at least agree to be careful? The idea that what happened to Annie could happen to you scares me." he looked back down at the paper with its angry red markings.

I watched him for a second, before speaking, "I won't do anything stupid. I'll watch out and avoid situations where I could be taken unaware, but I can't let these threats rule my life."

"I don't expect you to, I just want you to be careful. Have you at least told the Anikitos about it?"

Anikitos is what we call our pack leaders, at least among the Kitsune who become wolves, our Anikitos has been a friend of my family for years, Bill is like a second father. Knowing and trusting him had helped my transition when I discovered the Kitsune and that I am one.

I shook my head, "I haven't had a chance. I've been home less than ten minutes." he looked at me expectantly, "I'll tell him, just not right now."

"All right, then." he nodded, content that I would let our pack leader know about the newest threat. He dropped the paper back onto the table and headed for the kitchen. "You ready to eat? It'll be better while it's still hot."

"Sure." I followed him, "Chinese smells great, Super Wok I assume?"

"Of course."

We ate while discussing our day. He'd spent most of his repairing a fence that had let out several of my father's cattle. I told him about mine, how frustrating I had found trying to work while constantly fielding calls from reporters.

"The whole thing with Annie has me in shock. We grew up together, were in the same class most of the way through school, even played tennis together in high school."

"I'm sorry," he laid his one hand over mine on the small table, "I didn't know her. I knew who she was, I recognized her on sight, but being older, I never spent any time with her."

I nodded, appreciating his sympathy but understanding what he meant by not really knowing her. The only reason he'd known me in high school was because he'd hung out with my sister Payson, who'd been in his class.

"That this would happen around here and that she would be left on campus bothers me. It's almost like she was left somewhere directly connected to you," he reasoned.

I looked at him a moment, thinking about the possibility. Was Annie killed as a message to me? Or was it just a coincidence that she had been dumped on campus? Was the note from her killers or just the group that had been harassing us using it to their advantage? So many possibilities that I had no answers for.

"I don't want to think about it anymore tonight. Let's go watch some screen and relax. I've been dealing with this all day and I need a break." I said, standing to clean up after dinner.

"All right." He agreed.

About the author:

Melissa was born and raised in Arizona, she's spent her entire life living across the southern half of the state. She's found that, along with her husband and three children, she prefers the small towns and rural life to feeling packed into a city.

She started reading at a very young age, and her love for series started early, as the first real books she remembers reading is the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Through the years she's found that there's little she won't read, and her tastes vary from westerns, to romance, to sci-fi / fantasy and horror.

Now, the story behind the story...check it out!

Kristine Overbrook started writing in earnest seven years ago. One night, after a long day at work she imagined a story about a woman bitten by a werewolf. A dear friend, who was a writer herself, wouldn’t let Kristine ignore the tale. She wrote and revised it and submitted it to editors and publishers.

After a while another story came to mind, and she wrote it. Then a third and she wrote that as well.

During all of that writing she realized two things. First, love must enter into the equation and the couple must live happily ever after. Second, paranormal characters are far more interesting than “normal” humans.

It took seven years and several revisions for Kristine to get her first novel published. On July 23, 2012 Creatures of the Moon, a paranormal romantic suspense, was released by Crimson Romance, the romance imprint of F+W Media, Inc.

Today, Kristine celebrates the release of her second novel also from Crimson Romance. Once Upon a Couch is a light paranormal romance. It is the first book of the Paranormal Practice Series.

Alex Holmes is the sheriff of Villa Hollow. His town, his world, is normally rather quiet, until Dr. Lester moves in. Soon, he can’t go an hour without the tendrils of her thoughts intruding in his mind. He even has to perform meditative exercise to keep from knowing when she’s hungry. Added to that, the Coalition has taken her in their sights. He has every reason to keep his distance, but will listen to none of them.

Dr. Josephine Lester moves into the town of Villa Hollow to open her psychiatric practice. In her line of work, she expects odd. She expects disturbed. What she doesn’t expect is a sleepwalking vampire, a haunted house, or a coalition of people working against the paranormal element to try to run her out of town.

If she leaves, where does the vegetarian werewolf go when she is distraught over eating meat? To whom does the poor housewife seeing little green men turn?

If she stays, will the handsome telepathic sheriff help her keep her sanity?

Book Review -- Creatures of the Moon by Kristine Overbrook!!! (5 STARS) #goodreads @krisoverbrook

Creatures of the MoonCreatures of the Moon by Kristine Overbrook
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Normally cop/detective books are not my go-to read, but a friend highly recommended Creatures. So I checked it out. I'm so glad I did! The characters were intriguing and I looked forward to finding out more about them and the case they were solving. One of my favorite things about this book was the way the author made the werewolves so realistic.

I will definitely be reading more by this author!

Couple of my fave lines:
Ryan: "Getting neater at eating, too."
Lydia: Pleasure coursed through her like sunlight invading shadow.

Random Alert! Random. Alert. Alert. Alert...
So last year for Halloween the hubby and I went to a corn maze. Omigosh, it was so fun! Here are a few pix...

I looove pumpkins! Bought ALL of these...you believe that, right?  But I did buy a graphic t-shirt that said: Mazed and Cornfused! hahahahaha Get it? So pun-y!!!! ;)

This was the Maze... Yeah, we got lost--several times--and had to dodge lots of mud puddles, but it was super fun!
We had to carry poles with a flag on the end throughout the maze so the staff people could find us if we got uber lost. Of course, I pretended I was a grim reaper, like, the entire time. That may or may not have annoyed the hubby, but heck, that's my job...right? Bwahaha
And for your random action! Me trying to take a picture with Rusty pup yesterday when I got home from work. You can see how well that turned out! :P

Author Interview -- Renita Pizzitola AND an Excerpt from Gossamer! #youngadult #paranormal #romance

Title: GOSSAMER
Author: Renita Pizzitola
Publisher: Lyrical Press, Inc.
Series: Gossamer
Release date: October 8, 2012
Genre: Young Adult/Paranormal/Romance
Website: www.renitapizzitola.com
Twitter: @renitapizzitola
Buy Links: Amazon/Barnes and Noble/ iBooks/Lyrical Press

Karen: Welcome, Renita! It’s great to have you here today! *virtual handshake*

Renita: Hi Karen! It’s great to be here!

Karen: Let the fun begin! Can you tell my readers what’s the weirdest thing you like to eat?

Renita: I don’t really think I eat anything that unusual. I do like to put salt on watermelon which my husband thinks is weird, but he doesn’t even eat watermelon so I think he’s weird.

Karen: Tell us about your novel, GOSSAMER, what’s it about?

Renita: Gossamer is based on Irish legends in a modern day setting and ends with a classic fairy tale twist. Half of the story takes place in our ‘human world’ and the other half takes place in the magical faery realm known as Tír na nÓg. The story focuses on Kyla, who goes by Kylie. She’s never really considered herself to be anything special—just a normal girl coasting in the middle, but when she meets Grant things begin to change. She soon discovers she’s part of an elaborate plot to save two children, and now she’s in danger. With her life in Grant’s hands, she flees to a world she never even knew existed, but as more secrets are revealed she discovers her new life comes with a price—her freedom.

Karen: How did you come up with the title?

Renita: I wanted something that made readers not only think of faeries but somehow pertained to the book. Gossamer makes me think of something that is thin and delicate, like faerie wings or a veil, which I think is fitting for Kylie’s life. Her true identity was thinly veiled and as secrets are exposed the delicate thread holding her life together unravels.

Karen: What was your favorite part/scene to write in GOSSAMER?

Renita: My favorite scene is near the end so I can’t say much...but, I can say it has to do with a little ambrosia wine mishap. I love this part because we get to see a different side of Kylie and there is an interesting exchanges between her and one of her love interests.

Karen: Tell me about the cover! Did you have a say in the process for choosing it?

Renita: The cover is gorgeous! I did have some say in it, but I know Lyrical creates amazing covers so I put my trust in them. I basically wanted Kylie on the cover in a long dress and that’s exactly what I got! :)

Karen: How long did it take for GOSSAMER to be published (from offer to release date)? Tell us a little about the process.

Renita: I signed with Lyrical in early January 2012, so the process took right around ten months. I love my editor, Abby, and she and I went through Gossamer several times to get it just right. She always knew where to ask more of me and I have to say those are now some of my favorite scenes. Although, eventually, she just had to tell me to back away from the keyboard. Do authors ever think their work is really done?

Karen: What was the first thing you thought/did when you received the offer?

Renita: I reread the email. Like three times. Maybe four. I didn’t believe it because I had submitted to Lyrical only a few days prior to receiving the offer. Initially, I assumed it was another rejection. After a while I guess you just anticipate them, but when my brain processed what I’d just read I was shocked...then I emailed my critique partners...then I freaked out some more...and then my brain slowly started functioning again.

Karen: Will there be a sequel to GOSSAMER?

Renita: Yes! GILDED is book two and its expected date of publication is June 2013 from Lyrical Press. I love this book because Kylie learns more about herself and really develops as an individual. She’s more determined, takes more risks, and discovers how powerful she can be.

Karen: (Random question alert!!) Be honest, what’s the longest you’ve gone without washing your hair?

Renita: Hmm, I’m sure there was some point when my kids were newborns and a shower that lasted over five minutes was unheard of, but I think sleep deprivation erased them from my mind. Although, more likely, my brain might have just repressed those memories.

Karen: Back to the hard-hitting questions…What new projects are you working on?

Renita: Well, edits are under way for DREAM ON which is an adult paranormal romance to be released in the spring and I’ve been working on GRANTED, the final book in the Gossamer series. I’m also trying to squeeze in a new project that has yet to be named. It’s something pretty different for me so we’ll see how that goes. :)

Karen: Is there an author that you’d like to stalk, uh, meet?

Renita: Of course! There are several, but I’d have to say my favorite author is Richelle Mead. She has excellent worldbuilding, her heroines are always strong and likeable, and she really knows how to create some major chemistry between characters. I also admire her ability to write both YA and Adult.

Karen: What were some of the biggest challenges to getting published?

Renita: Umm, everything? :) I think the hardest part was the fact YA is an over-saturated market. It’s very hard to get noticed. Dealing with rejection is also hard. I think you get used to it and can’t really take it personally but at times it can be discouraging. I think perseverance is a key. You have to just keep submitting and, above all else, writing.

Karen: What was the first thought that crossed your mind when you started editing rounds with your editor?

Renita: Several expletives. Kidding...sort of. I remember thinking, holy crap, I don’t know anything about writing! It was nothing against my editor, she’s amazing, but I had so many ‘unnecessary words’ to omit I felt like I was a step away from writing in haiku.

Karen: Now let’s delve a little deeper. Shall we? *winks* When did the desire to write consume you?

Renita: I remember in second grade putting together a ‘book’ as a class project and absolutely loving it.

Karen: How did you know this is what you wanted to be when you grew up?

Renita: I loved writing short stories for class assignments and my teachers and family always encouraged my writing, but it wasn’t until high school that I really dreamed of writing professionally.

Karen: Do you have a day job? Or do you write full-time?

Renita: I’m a part time preschool teacher and a full time mom. :) My kids have always kept me pretty busy, but I do most of my writing at night, so it seems to fit into my schedule nicely.

Karen: Who controls your characters? You or them?

Renita: I’d like to think I do, but they often have minds of their own. I think letting the characters control it makes for a better story in the end.

Karen: If them, when are they the most persistent?

Renita: I think scenes where emotions are running high. Their exchanges are definitely driven by how they feel and many times go in a different direction than I had planned.

Karen: Where do you write? (office, coffee shop, train, meadow, etc.)

Renita: I write mostly at home but I do take my netbook with me when I’m doing stuff with my kids and always try to squeeze in some writing time.

Karen: How long does it take you to write a book?

Renita: First drafts don’t take me too long when I’m really focused. Sometimes I start a project and have trouble working on it. I typically shelve those and will maybe return to them, but with some projects all I want to do is write and every moment I’m not I’m thinking about it.

Karen: How do you get into the writing zone? And does chocolate help with this?

Renita: A better question would be: What doesn’t chocolate help with? I prefer to write at night and I like to have a block of uninterrupted time. Sometimes I listen to music but not always.

Karen: What do you do in your down-time…if there is such a thing?

Renita: When I’m not spending time with my family, I love hanging out with my friends. They help me maintain my sanity. We’ve known each other since we were kids and they really are awesome friends...which is why I’ve kept them around so long ;)

Karen: If you could have telepathy (that could be turned on/off) or invisibility, which would you choose? And why?

Renita: Ooh, that’s a tough one. It would be pretty cool to communicate with people through telepathy, but I can think of several occasions—both good and bad—where it would have been really nice to just disappear...so I’m going with invisibility.

Karen: Before we go, you must face the rapid fire round. Dun, dun, dun…

Coffee or tea? Coffee
Chocolate: dark or milk? Dark
Flats or heels? Both
Yes or no? Yes
Star Wars or Star Trek? (don’t hate me!) Neither
Ice: crushed or cubed? Crushed
Italian or French (food, not men)? Italian
Panster or plotter? Both, mostly pantser
Paper or plastic? Paper
Vampires or werewolves? Vampires
Pencil or pen? Pen
Firemen or cops? Firemen!!!

Karen: Thank you so much for stopping by, Renita! Feel free to visit any time!

Renita: Thanks for having me, Karen! I enjoyed answering all your questions and it was great visiting with you!

I took several careful steps forward even as my body was reluctant to move. Every instinct told me to turn around, but I had to know what summoned me. I felt a bit unsettled but couldn’t resist.
I approached a large tree, but instead of my usual oak it was an ash. I felt pretty confident this was where the call came from, so I placed my hand on the tree and slowly peeked around it.

I found a small clearing. The air was still thick, and even though I knew it was daytime, the sun did not shine through the canopy overhead. Next to my large oak tree on the other side of the clearing stood a woman with her back toward me. Had she been on the other side of the oak tree in my last dream?

She had extremely long, blonde hair, almost silvery. The pale strands lay like silken threads down her back in stark contrast to her black attire. She wore a dress with sleeves that puffed at the shoulder then ran tight down to her wrists. The gown tucked in at the waist and billowed out into a full skirt which touched the forest floor. The thick, heavy fabric seemed as if it would weigh down her slender silhouette. Her petite frame looked delicate, and I could tell she was young. She moved her head a little to the side, her hair forming a shimmering veil obscuring any real view of her face. She sensed my arrival and spoke. Her soft, delicate voice drew me in. I took another step forward to hear her better.
Her sweet voice spoke again, “They have found you. They have found you, Kyla.”
How did she know my name? And what did she mean they found me? Did she mean Grant and Conor? They had been looking for me, or maybe she meant Matt. He had found me for The Rite. Either way this wasn’t new information. Yet, I suspected I needed to know something more. Her soothing voice beckoned, and I stepped closer and closer.
Somewhere behind me, I heard a shout. It was a woman’s voice but this one was firm. “Kyla, stop!” I froze at the command. “Turn around!” The voice demanded.
The lady by the tree yanked her head up at a speed no human could match. With her neck craned, she turned her head side to side with quick, sharp, birdlike movements as if trying to place where the other voice had come from.
An uneasy feeling grew within me. Something wasn’t right. I took a careful step backward and a twig snapped beneath my weight. She whipped her head around at the sound. Her white, blonde hair fanned out around her with the rapid motion, finally settling down and exposing her face.
I screamed.
