My RWA Chapter's 3rd Annual “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest is OPEN! #writemotivation

JUDI(Reblogged from my RWA sister, Jenna Jaxon. Ohhh, guess what?? My lovely agent Terrie Wolf is one of the final judges!!!!)

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a member of the Chesapeake Romance Writers, my local chapter of Romance Writers of America.  Two years ago we inaugurated an annual writing contest in memory of our long-time member Judi McCoy, author of fourteen romances and the very popular “Dogwalker” romantic mystery series.

Judi was a driving force in our chapter, a mentor to new writers, a great critique partner, and an avid dog lover.  Her beloved bichon frise, Rudy, was a rescue dog and Judy supported the Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue organization where she adopted him.

To honor the memory of Judi and Rudy, Chesapeake Romance Writers is once again holding our “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest. That was one of Judi’s favorite pieces of advice to all of us writers and we thought it an apropos title for this contest.  If you’ve finished a book, at least 55K in length, please consider submitting it to our contest.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Tidewater Bichon Frise Rescue organization in memory of Judi and Rudy.

Complete details on the contest are now available on our Chesapeake Romance Writers website or you can email me (Jenna) crwc@rocketmail.com with any questions, but I’ll give you the highlights here.

The contest is open to both published and unpublished authors, although the work submitted must be unpublished AND remain unpublished or uncontracted until after the contest.  Should an entered work become contracted or published before the contest ends, the work will be withdrawn from consideration and the entry fee will not be refunded.

To enter you need to submit the first and last chapters of your unpublished 55K+ manuscript (no prologues or epilogues), plus a two-page synopsis of the entire work that will not be judged.  Total submission must not exceed 40 pages.

This year we are going GREEN–only electronic entries will be accepted.  You should submit two things: 1) the Contest Entry Form, available on the CRW website, and 2) the first and last chapters plus a two-page synopsis of the book in one single (1) Rich Text file.

Entrants will receive the First Round Judges’ Score Sheets with comments.  No comments will be made on the manuscripts themselves.  The three top scoring works in each category will advance to the Finals Round and will be ranked by the Category Finals Judge.

Contest opens:  August 1, 2014
Deadline for Entry Fee and Submission:  Midnight, September 30, 2014
rudy+picCategories include:  Contemporary, Paranormal, Historical, Mainstream with Romantic Elements, Young Adult/New Adult, and this year we are adding EROTIC ROMANCE.

Finalist Judges for the contest are still being confirmed and will be announced shortly.
Winners will be announced at our chapter  meeting on January 10, 2015.
Entry Fee:  $15.00 for RWA members, $25.00 for non-RWA members

All Finalists will receive a certificate and a banner for their website.
First place Winners in each category will receive a Rudy Statuette and a check for $50.00.
I hope you will consider entering our 3rd annual “Finish the Damn Book!” Contest.  You’ll get great feedback and the chance to get your work before some excellent agents and editors in the publishing industry.  If you have questions for me, you can ask via comments or my Contact Me page.
I hope to see your name on a finalist list come October 31!

COME ON!  FINISH THAT DAMNED BOOK! :)

Check out Michelle's blog for more deets and the submission/judging schedule

A little about what I like to read and hope to see: anything paranormal, especially NA/YA and LGBT. Epic fantasy, magical realism, erotic romance, and sci-fi also rock my socks! For contemporary or adult, it really has to grab me with lots of emotions and intense character arcs. I'm a sucker for a villain who is more then just the bad guy. So... Show me your stuff!

Challenge for ya. Bwahaha! Most of my peeps know me as Banshee on social media, but for the #QueryKombat I've gone a different and secretive route as to hide my superwoman identity ;) As you participate, try and guess my handle...if you dare.

XOXO

Longing - Chapter 1 (snippet #7)...

“We can find another girl. Make it a party. Or I can just wat—”

“No,” she snapped.

“So it’s just over then?” His voice had an edge to it. “I thought we had something special?”

She nodded. “I… I hoped we had. I didn’t want to hurt you. You’re a good person.”

“Fine.” He turned away and walked back to the bed. “Rich, bitch,” he mumbled as he crawled back under the covers. “Get out.” Icy pricks pimpled her skin. The sunlight coming in through the window began to darken as her vision dulled. Colors faded as anger pulsed through her veins.

How dare he speak to me like that, the beast bellowed in her mind. End him.

Wanted to share some of the songs that inspired me as I wrote Becoming...
Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett

Today's excerpt is brought to you by roll of the dice feature at Random.Org :P (Chapter 6, 6th page, 1st paragraph). Aiden (the knight AKA dragon killer) is having lunch with Zoe to exchange cellphones from when they literally ran into each other at the hospital and something terrifying happens to Zoe.

She dropped her pizza onto her plate with a thud. Clutching her arm to her chest, she bolted for the ladies room. Not stopping to pick up her phone or her bag, she ran. What the hell was wrong with her? Had she imagined that? Had Aiden seen it?

In the bathroom, she shoved her scalding arm under the faucet, waving her other hand in front of the auto-sensor to keep the water on. A toilet flushed, and Zoe bent down, trying to appear as if she were just washing her hands. The other girl seemed distracted, in her own little world of makeup application.

When she finally left, Zoe let out a whimper. She wanted to scream, but who knew how many other women were in the stalls? She stared down at her arm. It looked completely normal. No insane red scales. No burning. She cut off the water and took a couple deep breaths. This was all too much. The weird puffs of smoke, the sensation of always being too hot and, now, flashing scales. How could this be happening? This was not what she’d expected from her second chance at life.

Dragon update... The prequel for Becoming (titled Longing) is finished and on tomorrow will be with my fabulous editor!! :D

  • Twitter pitch: After a transplant gives Zoe a dragon shifter’s heart, she learns that her online boyfriend is her donor and...a girl.

Today's excerpt immediately follows Zoe and Taylor's first kiss (Zoe's POV)...it shows the epitome of Zoe's self-doubt and paranoia. She doesn't see how wonderful she is, but Taylor does :)

Read last week's kiss scene here!

Zoe wanted to be closer, moaned her frustration with the hateful armrest keeping them apart. Her body ached for more. Kissing Taylor made Zoe’s skin prickle with unknown desires.

She worked her fingers along the back of Taylor’s neck, trying clumsily to imitate Taylor’s gentle caresses. Too soon, Taylor backed away, and Zoe’s lips were on fire again. The sweet relief of the goddess’s kiss had been ripped away, leaving her burning with shame. She’d been too aggressive. Too forward. Too stupid. What had she been thinking, wrapping her hands around Taylor like that? She’d had no idea what she was doing. All she’d known was she didn’t want it to stop. But it had. Once again, she’d screwed things up.

She pulled her hands away from Taylor, but the goddess grabbed them in hers and squeezed gently. Taylor’s expression grew serious, and Zoe felt the urge to run.

Oh God, here it comes. The Talk.

Over before it had begun. Taylor had probably thought if things went any further she’d have to look at Zoe’s scar. Of course that was it. No one would ever want to be with her…not like that. She was a freak. A scarred, smoke-breathing, scale-flashing freak of nature.

Why had she let herself get attached? Why had she thought someone could love her? She should’ve known better.

Zoe’s heart squashed all the fireflies in its path as it fell to her feet.

Dragon update... The prequel for Becoming is finished, and I'm almost done with my edits on it. Next step is sending it off to my editor! Now, for exciting news... It's been a tough decision, but the prequel FINALLY has a title! Are you ready?? <insert drum roll here> The title for the prequel is: Longing!!!
 Gotta a dragon!
