  • Am pluggin' away on book #2 in the Witch Way series. Current word count is a little over 62,000 words!
  • Here's a teaser line from book #2 I'm super happy with (as always, no spoilers to book #1 or #2). This is my girl Breena thinking about a lame arse excuse from one of her fellas. Omigod, if his reasoning gets any more circular, I may loop for eternity.
Getting personal... A Karen Fail!
So my best friend--since the 4th grade--celebrated her 30th birthday in July! I was so happy for her, but sad cos I was going to be out of town (at RWA) and would miss her BIG celebration.

When I got back home, things were crazy with WWTT's release, the month-long blog tour, my day job, writing book #2 and waiting for her final present that it put me behind in getting her gift mailed out. Once I got her presents together, wrote out this super long note and packaged everything, I took it to the post office. Hooray, right?

Well... It had been almost a week since the tracking confirmation said it was delivered. So, I'm like: Hmm. I knew my BFF would've let me know once she got her gift, so I texted her and she said she hadn't received it. Ohh no! *panics*

(Insert backstory here) I'd scrolled through our texts and thought I'd found her home address (she lives 8 hours from me). Anyway, you can see where this is going. I mailed it to the wrong place! (Yes, I shoulda already had it saved in Google contacts, I'm slack...it's added now!)

My BFF was my Maid of Honor 2006
Wanna know where I mailed her b-day gift? To a freakin' restaurant!! Holy crap! Yes, I did. It was the most recent address I had in my text cos it was the most recent place we'd met up to hang out when I went to my BIL's wedding in May.

What happened to the gift? Right... So, I called the restaurant Monday night. Yes, they thought I was crazy. I don't disagree. They hadn't seen it and said to call back Tuesday to speak with the daytime manager. I did and she hadn't seen it either. Of course, I'm kicking myself cos I mailed my BFF's birthday present to the wrong dang address! *growls*

Annoyed with myself, I call the post office on a hope and a prayer that it somehow got returned to them. Yeah, they said no they didn't have it. Ugh! But then, the postal worker asks what the name of the restaurant was and I say: Cracker Barrel. She says, hold on. Apparently the carrier for that route was standing right there and said she saw the package in the mailbox still. Hooray!!! So they graciously offered to deliver the present to the correct address.

So I'm hoping today it will be waiting for my BFF when she gets home from work. *prays* Moral of this story...CONFIRM addresses before mailing something and SLEEP more so your brain isn't complete mush like mine. Phew.

Of course, my BFF was so sweet about the whole thing and I'm blessed to have such a wonderful friend in my life.

Karen vs. The Lost B-day Gift
To be continued...

Rusty pup and me. He was only a few weeks old in 2008.
Okay, so this picture brings back memories! Picture this...a frosty January day. The hubs and I had driven 17 hours one way to Wisconsin (where Rustys come from) to get our little pup. It was a whirlwind trip. We talked to the breeders on that Thursday night, dreamed of our own little fella all Friday and then hopped in the car on Saturday. Got Rusty that same night (well, 2:00 AM), stayed in a hotel (without telling them about Rusty...whoopsy) and then drove 17 hours home the next day!
This is me and the cutie pie when he was a wee little bit of a thing and an even bigger demon!!! "Kill all humans!" Yes, that's what he was thinking. I can read doggie minds. Bet ya didn't know that about me. Hah.

Orin closed the distance between them with one smooth step and drew her into a powerful embrace, latching his arms around her waist and holding her snug against his chest. “I’ve missed you.” He traced her jaw line with a trail of hot kisses. His breath caressed her skin.

“I can tell.” Breena lifted her head off his shoulder, so he could see her playful eye roll.

The excitement was short-lived. A loud tap on the window behind me froze me in place. Very disheveled, sitting astride a shirtless guy. Turning around, I flattened my hand to the fogged-up window and made a circle to see out. I had a flash of Titanic, only Kate and Leo got to finish what they’d started.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

More Pax and Greta to come in September!! Thanks again for stopping by! Your support and feedback is greatly appreciated! Get a sneak peek for more awesome authors at SSS.

Next week we'll be visiting Breena from Witch Way to Turn in a very steamy scene with one of the two hot supernatural boys vying for her affection!

“Pax,” I whispered against his lips.

Guiding his shirt up and off, I ran my hands along the tight muscles of his arms, his chest, his abs...he moaned.

Goddess.

He cradled my face and leaned forward until I could feel his breath on my mouth. “Kiss me.”

The heat of his touch burned me to the soul, melted away any thought I had except for the fire of his embrace.

Getting personal...
The print book arrived in the mail on Thursday!
The arrival of Witch Way to Turn print book to my home... A tale through photography. The original print release date was October 1st. So when Amazon told me my books had shipped, I didn't believe it...at first!

Opening it ever so carefully...

The feeling of seeing my book--right there--in front of me was...incredible. Like a dream come true.

Actually holding the words that were once only in my mind...

Then... I held it. Cradled it in my hands. Felt along its binding and basked in every square inch of its beauty.
On the page...
But the part that stole my breath and made my heart race was opening it. There, in front of me, were my words on the page. I flipped through and immediately looked at the last sentence--my fave thing to do when I'm looking at print books.

Even though I read e-books almost exclusively, seeing Witch Way to Turn in print on the page was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I'm so happy and grateful for this opportunity. A BIG thank you to Lyrical Press!!

eBook Giveaway Contest and My Author Foreward for Witch Way to Turn :)

See info below to win a free eBook of Witch Way to Turn!

Dear Lovely Reader,

You are about to embark on a journey with the characters who have been talking to me for quite awhile. Witch Way to Turn all began in July 2010 after the Romance Writers of America (RWA) conference in Orlando, FL. I couldn’t get this chick’s voice out of my head. I knew her name immediately (Breena), even though her last name went through several different versions before I was compelled (vampire humor) to use Cross. She wouldn’t stop telling me about these two guys who were vying for her attention and the love she had for her precious foster sister.

Breena and I share several things… One, our love of food, especially gravy biscuits. Two, we both grew up in small towns, Breena’s hometown being only ten minutes from my own real one in North Carolina. And three, the desire to have something that was so close but yet so far away. Breena’s desire was custody of her seven-year-old foster sister. Mine was to have Breena’s story published. I wanted with ever fiber of my being for her story to be read. Yes, Breena has her flaws. Who doesn’t? But she strived to better herself by cleaning up her foul language, attending college and controlling the darkness inside of her.

Witch Way to Turn has been a labor of love. When I got home from the RWA conference, I immediately started writing Breena’s story. I couldn’t stop. I thought about her day and night. I wrote day and night. While working my full-time job, I completed Witch Way to Turn in only three months. I actually wrote the end on Breena’s birthday, October 30th. Now, the end wasn’t really the end…actually, that’s when the real work began. I’d written Witch Way to Turn in the first person point-of-view as a young adult novel. Well, that just wasn’t working. I’d gotten many requests for it, which ended in just as many rejections. I couldn’t understand why. Agents and editors alike enjoyed my voice, but something didn’t click. The issues that I’d written about in this story dealt heavily with sex and abuse, which didn’t go over well in the young adult genre. At one point, an editor asked me if I’d read very many young adult novels and at the time, sadly, I hadn’t. One of my readers said it was like watching a train wreck, she just couldn’t look away. I was grateful for her comments, and I knew something big had to change.

So I rewrote Witch Way to Turn as an adult novel and upped Breena’s age from eighteen to twenty-one but kept it in the first person point-of-view. Still requests came in and so did the rejections. I became seriously frustrated. What was I doing wrong? No one could tell me and obviously, I couldn’t see it. How could I grasp so many straws only to have them slip through my fingers? It wasn’t until a lovely author friend read Witch Way to Turn and gave me her brutally honest opinion. Her feedback was invaluable. I knew how to fix my story.

So I took a break from querying in order to do a third complete rewrite. I changed Witch Way to Turn back into a young adult novel and switched it to third person point-of-view. This made all the difference. By telling Breena’s story in the third person, I was able to add in the points of view for the two heroes. It was long overdue. Myles and Orin both had been talking to me too. They wanted to be heard. Needed to be heard. I can’t wait for you to meet them. Both boys are unique and wonderfully flawed, but they each meet specific needs in Breena’s life. Too bad she can’t have them both!

Now that Witch Way to Turn was as polished as I could get it and all the voices in my head were on the page, I began querying again. I’d heard great things about Lyrical Press, but I knew they didn’t publish the young adult genre (at the time). Even so, Breena was eighteen and I thought, what would it hurt to ask if they might be interested. I emailed to see if they would accept a submission for a work with an eighteen-year-old heroine. They said, yes, as long as it fell into one of their current genres they published. It did. I got my manuscript and synopsis ready and queried.

Even though I’d finished writing Witch Way to Turn in October of 2010, it wasn’t until December 19th of 2011 that I received the most exciting news. I could hardly believe it. When I saw a contract from Lyrical Press waiting for me in my inbox, I thought it was a mistake. I immediately sent it to my husband to review. I was bouncing up and down waiting for him to finish reading it. When he did and said it was for real, I ran through the house screaming. Yes, true story. I was so excited. Breena would finally have her story told.

Thank you so much for taking this journey with Breena and me. I am grateful for each one of you and look forward to sharing more stories with you in the near future.

And to help you along the way, I'll be giving away one eBook of Witch Way to Turn! To enter, please "Like" Witch Way to Turn eBook, Print and my Author Page on Amazon, then fill out this Form - That's it, easy-peasy!

He flattened me against the Jeep's backseat. I had to admit, it wasn’t the most comfortable position, but the fire between us had me reeling enough that I barely noticed.

His touch was soft and sure as he pushed the wrap from my shoulders, softly kissing the skin up to the curve of my neck.

My chest heaved and for a moment it seemed I could feel the sun on my skin.

I wanted him. And I wondered if he felt it too...but we shouldn’t be together.
